First Bus travel arrangements from Monday, May 21st 2020

26th May 2020 by Timsbury Parish Council

Following recent guidance from the Government, First Bus has made an announcement on changes to keep services running and provide reassurance for essential travel and key workers:

First Bus has responded to Government advice to enable social distancing on public transport and through this week we’re implementing additional steps to ensure a safer journey for everyone:

  • Our buses we will be operating at a reduced capacity with around 1 in 4 seats being available. The revised capacity will be displayed via a sticker on the exterior front of the bus. If any journey reaches its revised maximum capacity, the driver will update the destination screen to show “Bus full due to social distancing” and then adopt a one-off / one-on process at subsequent stops.
  • Customers will be encouraged to sit next to a window with a row empty in front and a row empty behind with seat labelling in place as necessary. Please note these seating measures are advisory for customers and we will not be asking our drivers to enforce them or leave their cab area, unless operating the manual bus ramp. The driver will help advise customers when boarding where seats are available.

The above procedures are being put in place following consultation with trade union representatives and following learnings from several social distancing trials across the UK, including on route 24 in Bristol.

These measures will be actively promoted through customer channels together with the reinforcement of existing measures to minimise transfer of the Covid-19 virus such as encouraging alternative payment to cash.

We will also be encouraging customers to wear face coverings, if they can. Please note we will not be asking drivers to wear face coverings whilst driving as it may prove to be a distraction to them. In addition, the cab area is separated from the saloon by a screen.

Although bus services are only provided for those that need to make essential journeys, we expect there will be occasions when customers may not be able to board their intended journey due to capacity levels being reached. In line with this, we are therefore advising those who cannot avoid public transport to check their journey details in advance, avoid busier periods and allow extra time for their journey as they may need to wait if their bus is full when it arrives.

We are also working hard with central government and locally with WECA and North Somerset Council to increase our levels of service. This includes the major operation of bringing back buses ready for service again and is being undertaken in line with discussions around funding as passenger numbers are expected to remain very low. We will keep you updated on further changes

Our key messages for our customers are:

  • Only travel if your journey is necessary
  • Please be aware of others who may have a priority need to travel
  • Look out for ‘Bus full due to social distancing’ messages on the destination display, which means the bus may not stop and be prepared to allow extra time or waiting to complete your journey

Bus services will have a key part to play as and when restrictions are progressively eased and we will continue to work with local authorities and our industry partners on the safe resumption of services, reflecting levels of demand, and in keeping with government and public health authority guidelines.

Football 8.02.2020: Timsbury Athletic 4 Wells City Reserves 2

10th February 2020 by Timsbury Parish Council

Timsbury Athletic strengthened their position at the top of the Uhlsport Somerset County League Division 1 with a 4-2 home win against Wells City Reserves but they needed all of their battling qualities to come out on top against a side who pressed for long periods. Special guest for the day was the intrepid walker SpeedoMick  who called into Timsbury on his charity trek from John O’Groats to Lands End and boosted his kitty with the takings from the match and a bucket in the clubroom.

Timsbury came close to an early lead when Jesse Bishop won a vital header to put Rhys Cook clear but the striker’s shot was saved by keeper Josh Bond. At the other end Keiran Padfield was just wide with a clear chance before the visitors took the lead with a superb strike from George Carey whose left foot shot into the top corner of the net gave Josh Wilcox no chance.

Padfield then spurned another good opportunity shooting over the top and it was to prove costly when Ellis Hancock headed the home side level from Cook’s corner. As Timsbury kept up the pressure Matt Books headed just over and Hancock saw a goal-bound effort stopped on the line. The captain was not to be denied three minutes from half-time, however, when he again demonstrated his strength in the air heading home a Jack Nix cross.

Wells showed their intentions at the beginning of the second half but against the run of play a bad mistake by Bond handed Cook the chance to put the home side 3-1 in front. With most of the action in the Timsbury half Padfield had a shot deflected past the post and  Nix headed off the goal line. In the 65th minute Wells did pull a goal back when Joe Reilly scored direct from a corner .

In a rare foray to the other end Hancock shot just past the post but it was Wells who continued to press and Wilcox saved well from Lee Cox and Cam Glendinning while Reilly shot wide with a late chance. To rub salt in the wounds Timsbury broke clear in stoppage time and after Cook’s shot had been saved by Bond ,Hancock stroked home the rebound to claim his second successive hat-trick. With news of Burnham’s shock defeat to lowly Wrington Redhill it proved to be a vital victory.

Rural Transport Consultation

7th February 2020 by Timsbury Parish Council

The West of England Combined Authority has published its long-awaited Bus Strategy Consultation Document. The travelling public is invited to read the document and to respond before March 15th. The document is strong on aspirations but weak on ways to fund and achieve them. The strategy document and consultation papers can be found via https://travelwest.info/projects/transport-consultations

Key elements of the section on rural services:

Some rationalisation of services to provide more consistent routes, consistent start and end points, and easy-to-understand clockface departure time

Peripheral transfer hubs that will also serve as locations where low-frequency rural services can operate as feeders into longer-distance inter-urban services.

Inter-urban and other rural services should aim for operating hours which align well with other urban services they connect to.

A rural/inter-urban network with a small number of ‘hubs’ in towns and other destination points, could also be connected by demand responsive and community transport services.

The network options need to include a detailed assessment of their impact on rural communities. This may include recommendations on more rural services and funding opportunities.

The management and pricing of parking provision will directly impact on people’s tendency to use the bus and the ability to grow passenger numbers.

Football 1.02.20: Timsbury Athletic 5 Somerton Town 0

3rd February 2020 by Timsbury Parish Council

Uhlsport Somerset County League Division 1 leaders Timsbury Athletic bounced back to form in emphatic style with a 5-0 home win over Somerton Town. Captain Ellis Hancock led the way with a hat-trick  with striker Rhys Cook grabbing a brace.

The game in fact started badly for Cook who had an early chance saved by Somerton keeper Brian Hardy and then missed a fifth-minute penalty scuffing his effort wide of the post after Chris Midgeley had been brought down. Hancock had a shot blocked on the line and Midgeley put the rebound over the top while another Cook effort was saved  by Hardy’s legs.

Timsbury’s domination eventually gained a positive reward after 19 minutes when Cook had at last something to celebrate turning well in the box before shooting home. Timsbury’s keeper Josh Wilcox was the architect of the home side’s second goal. Taking advantage of the strong wind his long clearance found Cook and although his shot was blocked by Hardy Hancock followed up to score. Right on half-time Hancock made it 3-0 firing home after being set up by the lively Cook.

Within a minute of the re-start the double act was at it again with Hancock rising well to head home Cook’s corner. With the wind now in their favour the visitors came more into the game with substitute Robbie Haggett shooting wide from distance and Jacob Holland clearing the crossbar.

Timsbury still remained dangerous, however, and Cook shot wide with a clear chance while Jack Nix was too high with a free-kick.  At the other end captain Luke Thomas headed wide and substitute Nathan Harris shot past the post. Midgeley embarked on a dangerous run for the home side only to put his final effort over the top before Cook ended the match with his second goal forcing the ball home in stoppage time for his eighteenth goal of the season.
