Football 6.10.2018: Yatton and Cleeve Utd 2 Timsbury Athletic 2

8th October 2018 by Timsbury Parish Council

Timsbury progressed into the third round of the Somerset Senior Cup, but only after this tight match ended with a penalty shoot out which they eventually won 5-4.

Ellis Hancock had the first attempt on goal but his 20-yard shot flew just over the bar. It wasn’t long before Timsbury took the lead when a Lutwama pass allowed Cook to run through on goal only to be brought down in the area for a penalty, from which he stepped up to make the score 1-0 from the spot. The home side’s response was immediate when Phillips in the Timsbury goal made a smart save from Hance. Kahya in the Yatton goal was then called upon to do likewise from a Midgley shot.

Both sides looked dangerous going forward with Hancock dragging his shot wide after good work from Lutwama and Cook, before Clayton’s attempt at the other end also failed to trouble the keeper. On the half hour Timsbury increased their lead when a Lutwama corner from the right found the head of an unmarked Hancock who gave the home keeper no chance. Timsbury were indebted to their keeper Phillips when he made a point blank save from a goalbound Hance effort right  on half time.

Timsbury looked to increase their advantage after the break when firstly a Heatley shot flew just wide then a probing run from Lutwama ended with his shot being pushed around the post. After 10 minutes Yatton gained a foothold in the match when a shot from Bird took a wicked deflection off the leg of Taylor, giving Phillips no chance in the Timsbury goal.

After 20 minutes the game was all square when a Matthew’s free kick from the edge of the box found the back of the net.  Both sides continued to press without any clearcut chances until the final minutes when a last ditch tackle from Midgely foiled Carpenter and then a neat turn and shot from Hancock narrowly missed the Yatton goal, meaning that the match ended in a penalty shot out.

Timsbury converted all their  5 penalties, with Phillips making a fine stop from the home sides third spot kick being the difference between the two sides.
